In late December, four ISLAND Project researchers will be embarking on an epic run along the 480km Tasmanian Trail.

RUN for the ISLAND is a new initiative to promote physical activity in the community, raise awareness for dementia risk reduction, recruit research participants and raise $25,000 for the ISLAND Project at the Wicking Dementia Research and Education Centre.

ISLAND Researchers Edward Hill, Jessica Collins, Joshua Eastgate and James Brady (pictured above) will run the trail, each covering approximately 25-kilometres each day over 5 days in December. This is the first team relay run of the Trail, and the runners are hoping to set a record for fastest team supported relay.

Along the way, they will be stopping off at regional centres to engage with the public, spreading important information about dementia risk reduction, and recruiting people over 50 years of age to become ISLAND participants. The RUN for the ISLAND crew is hoping to raise funds to enable ISLAND researchers to investigate avenues of potential dementia risk factors such as biological markers and their associations with other lifestyle factors.

En-route, there are several events planned, including a launch event in Devonport, various pop-up stops along the way, and a completion event in Dover. The RUN for the ISLAND crew will be posting regular updates through various online channels, with live GPS locations so you can follow along! Keep an eye out on the ISLAND events page for events near you!

Updates will be posted via

Annual surveys are now open for you to complete

ISLAND research participants have received an email invitation to do the ISLAND annual assessments and we encourage you to consider completing these surveys before they close on November 24th.

The surveys are a core research activity for the ISLAND Project and gives you another opportunity to update your Dementia Risk Profile to find out what has changed since last time.  Additionally, if you missed the chance to complete the online thinking and memory tasks in August, you can access these again now.

Thank you for your time and effort in supporting the ISLAND Project's research and your contributions are very valuable to us.  We could not do this research without you!

Thinking and memory tasks webinar recording

Thanks to all who attended the recent Thinking and Memory Tasks Webinar.  It was a fantastic opportunity to talk with ISLAND members about some of the preliminary findings from the tests that ISLAND participants completed in August, what they are measuring and some of the improvements made from the valuable feedback we have received.

If you missed the webinar or are interested in watching it, please click on this link to access the recording.
