Welcome to this edition of the ISLAND Project newsletter.  I am Dr Adam Kane, Project Officer for ISLAND.  We have a number of upcoming activities for you to consider and you will find more information below.

The ISLAND Project is now in its third year and the contributions you have made to our research is incredibly valuable. Thank you!  The ISLAND team is grateful for your time and effort in trying out our research activities and providing the data needed to push forward dementia prevention research.  You are helping us to understand who is most at risk of developing dementia and how we might diagnose pre-clinical dementia and therefore design possible treatments.  For example, TAS Test, a cognitive assessment tool recently developed at the University of Tasmania, and one many of you have tried, is ground-breaking research that could transform dementia prevention globally.

One of the objectives of the ISLAND Project is to raise awareness of dementia prevention.  We hope that as ISLAND participants you too are raising awareness in your families and communities.  And to give awareness raising a boost, the ISLAND Project is hosting a FREE expo in Devonport, focusing on dementia information and supports health prevention and general health and wellbeing.  Over 30 exhibitors will display their offerings at the paranaple convention centre on Thursday September 23rd, from 10am-2pm.  There will be a range of services, information and activities designed to keep people engaged socially, physically and cognitively, and information and services to support those living with dementia and their carers.  Come and have a chat with me and the ISLAND team!  And please help us promote this event by letting your family and friends know.  We hope that by attending the expo, people will be more connected, engaged and informed leaving the event than when they walked in.

On a final note, our research participants will soon receive an email invitation for our annual surveys.  This is a core activity of the ISLAND Project and we hope you consider completing the surveys over the period they will be open. This set of surveys will provide valuable insights that will inform the future directions of the ISLAND Project and provide unique evidence on the management of dementia risk that will potentially have a global impact.  So, keep a look out for this invitation in your inbox early October!  Again, we thank you in advance for your time and effort to complete these surveys.
